[Thinkpad] OT: Networking messaging app (ie Net Meeting Winpopup and the sorts)

Sorry for another off topic post but your input is most valuable.

Can anyone recommend a good, low price (read freebie) network communicator
like NetMeeting or Winpop for messaging, between systems on a small
home/office network?

Winpopup causes numerous lockups and NetMeeting is too temperamental at
times.
