[Thinkpad] Thinkpad A20M and XP

Installed XP (clean install) and have no sound on my laptop.  I've tried all possible drivers on the IBM site, and on the Cirrus Logic site (Crystal Sound Fusion).  No joy.  I don't even have sound in the headphones.  

I've thought of replacing the paper looking thing they call the microphone/speaker cable that runs from the keyboard to the speaker plug, but that probably wouldn't solve the headphone thing.  

Any suggestions that anyone may have to solve this problem would be appreciated.
