Hello again,
Thx for all the useful and constructive feedback that people have
given either on or off list about 2.5in enclosures. I decided in the
end to get a combined USB2.0/Firewire enclosure by Hotway, which can
be seen at:
http://www.hotway.com.tw/hd1-u2-wed.htm
Some more detailed and informative photos can be seen at:
http://usb.brando.com.hk/hotdrive1394hddcase.php
The version I received didn't come with the carry case (and wasn't
advertised as doing so), but did come with a 5V PSU. Had some trouble
initially as I had forgotten that I had set a power on password on the
30GB Hitachi drive.
So far working a treat with the IBM Firewire cardbus adapter on my A30
(using the PSU). Subjectively, it doesn't seem any slower than I would
expect via IDE, despite the fact that I've read that cardbus HDD
Firewire performance on the A30 is poor. Might bench it just to be
sure at some time.
Also working fine on my Epox 8RDA+ based PC on both USB2.0 and
Firewire without the PSU... the Hitachi HDD seems to manage on .5mA
provided by a single USB port even though the start up current is
listed as .96mA.
So far, then, it's recommended. If it goes south in the near future
I'll post again, but so far so good and overall a better buy I reckon
than the Ultrabay adapter.
