[Thinkpad] PCMCIA devices

I have a new Linksys network card I thought I had all set up. It
seemed to work. Then, today I found I couldn't connect. And the lower
right icon had changed to WPC11 not installed.
I tried powering the system down and on again. Still was the same way.
So I poke around here and there. I go to Device manager, where I was
advised before to check out. I find this network adaptor. I right
click on it. I managed to locate one oddity. I think it said, 'this
device is disabled'. Can't imagine why that should be. I try enabling
it.
Thereupon the Thinkpad seems to crash. The mouse pointer disappeared.
CTRL ALT DEL doesn't work. And at the very top edge of the screen, a
long series of black bars appeared. And the time of day is not
updating.
Before I had it set up first, I was wondering if I had all the
drivers. So I checked out the IBM site. The only mention of anything
related to PCMCIA was this item:
TP 600,770 - PCMCIA SelectaDock I/II Features for Windows 95/98
Applicable countries and regions
But I have a feeling that is for something I don't have.
Anything sound familiar here?
