[Thinkpad] Broken LCD

Hello,

Well I do have a selectabase 600 so I could use a dock.
Then again I already have several desktop systems.

When I upgraded the memory in the 600e I used PC100
memory so I assume it will work in the 600x. I also
forgot you could go up to 800 MHz if it is a speedstep.
Most of the systems I see are 500 MHz but a few dealers
have 650 MHz. I also noticed some T20s as well but
I decided in the end to avoid getting new options to
build the T series up to the existing level of the 600e.

I took the LCD out because I heard that if the fluid inside
leaks out it can cause damage. It was a LG panel and was
starting to have the pink screen for a few minutes at powerup
problem.

The only problem I had with the 366 MHz processor was to get
MPlayer to play a DVD under linux. It could play some reduced
resolution MPEG-2 video.

A bought a Thinkpad 380e at Dayton Hamvention last May so I
am going to finish loading it up and use that for a few days.
I got it to run some DOS stuff I still use.

If you want to use your 600e as a desktop with external monitor,
you xould get yourself a docking station (Thinkpad Dock).

They are now very (got one for $30) cheap, and provide convenient plugs
for screen, sound, mouse and keyboard, MIDI, etc..., extra USB, PLUS a
bay where you can put 700 bay CD or HD, PLUS a standard 5 1/2" bay for
DVD, CD-burner etc.. PLUS 3 standard PCI slots for a better sound card
or video card or LAN card or... The downside is that they are a bit
bulky : take as much space as a desktop, and must be used in the desktop
(as opposed to tower) style.

Beware that the memory of your 600e will likely not be supported on the
600X (faster front-side bus). On the other hand the 650 MHz processor is
upgradeable to 800, but NOT the 500 MHz one (the 500 MHz motherboard
does not support Speed-Step).

As for transferring the OS, quite a lot of drivers are different, that
you will have to download from the IBM site.

Hope this helps.

Hello,

My 600e tried to escape and tumbled off the table. Unfortunely the
LCD is all cracked although it still was displaying video.

Looking around it seemed like I could get a like machine (600e 366 MHz)
for about the same money as a new LCD.

I am thinking of getting a 650 MHz 600x and transfering the memory,
DVD/CD-RW, and OS over. I suppose I could use the 600e with
an external monitor. Some dealers at the computer show Sunday
usually have Thinkpads.
